A Radical Transformation for Nursing: A Report from the Carnegie Foundation

In addition to the Institute of Medicine report, the Carnegie Foundation released a series of recommendations in its report titled: Educating Nurses: A Call for Radical Transformation...

Here are some of the recommendations directly from the website:

that the baccalaureate degree in nursing should be the minimal educational level for entry into practice and that within ten years after graduation that all nurses complete a master’s degree in nursing
that nursing program capacities have to be expanded so that students can complete nursing programs in a reasonable amount of time and that the associate of nursing degree from community colleges be re-evaluated in light of the extended amount of time most student nurses spend in completing these nursing programs
that coursework be tied to what actually happens in patient care rather than in the abstract, helping students make the connection between acquiring and using knowledge, integrating the classroom with clinical practice
that nurses are prepared for the myriad contexts in which they will work, not merely a hospital setting.

Within a couple of weeks, I will be addressing each of the bulleted items as well as details from the report. I urge you to weigh in with your own thoughts!

Dr. Sternberg (Oklahoma State University) authors an open letter to Mr. Obama in light of the new realities facing higher education. While these realities primarily impact public higher education, there are also factors that will affect private colleges and universities.

Dear President Obama:
Thank you for the interest in, and passion for, higher education you showed in your talk on January 27 at the University of Michigan. Many of us in higher education, and especially in state institutions of higher learning, are excited about the prospect of increased federal funds directed at our enterprise, especially in a time of relative drought for state funding. I would like to express 10 hopes for the new program that perhaps some others share, although of course I only can speak for myself.

RICHMOND — Twenty-one months ago, Neil Burns bought a couple of scales.
It had been about 10 years since he had last weighed himself, because most scales didn't go high enough. These did.
Burns weighed 680 pounds.
"I was in denial," he said. "A feather could've knocked me over."

Three young children with autism spectrum disorders sat expectantly in a semi-circle, their teachers behind them. To begin the session the music therapist presented a picture schedule of what was about to happen.

The first picture showed it was time to sing "Hello." Aiden waved when it was his turn, maintaining a skill he had recently mastered. Candace answered "hi" after her teacher prompted her. Jordan waited patiently for his turn, swaying from side to side with the beat, but when he heard his name he could no longer contain himself. Learning to write is an essential aspect of becoming a truly learned individual. Often in professional colleges, the focus is on the job at the end of the curriculum and the core clinical/professional skills necessary for success. At The Christ College, our focus is definitely on preparing you for a career in health care, but we also have a commitment to developing the whole individual and range of skills necessary to become successful, engaged citizens.

At the College, we often discuss the importance of formal writing. I want to briefly focus today on writing informally and how it can help you develop both personally and professionally.

Writing informally (specifically writing for yourself as opposed to writing for someone else) gives you the opportunity to reflect more deeply on a variety of issues; improve your cognitive abilities; improve comprehension, and even enhance your oral communication.

My primary outlet for informal writing is the personal journal. There, I have the freedom to go where I want to go, say what I need to say, express myself with true honesty and record those events that matter most to me.

Though journal writing may not be for you, consider writing everyday, even if it's for a few minutes about your work or school or other topics of interest. Find your own place and securely store your writing and come back to it periodically. Remember, perfection is not the goal; writing is a process and takes time. Give yourself space to just "be" and to develop your voice.

The great authors usually have some system, so why not emulate one the greats? Or, better yet, come up with your own?

It's Science Friday! Longer Hospital Stays for Obese Individuals...

From Science Daily....some of the articles are older, but shed light on issues still very prevalent to us today. In this particular article (see also video) there is much to be said for getting those pounds off to avoid the lengthier stays and the various co-morbidities associated with obesity. You can bet losing that weight is one of my goals over the next two years...

You will note one important phrase used: direct relationship in the opening sentence. Anyone willing to explain the research significance of that statement?

"Sociologists found a direct relationship between obesity and duration and frequency of hospital stays. Researchers found that, on average, obese persons stayed one and a half days longer than those with normal weight. Sociologists attribute the connection to disease--46 percent of obese adults have high blood pressure. I thought I would take a moment in today's blog posting to share with you a brief overview of "who's who" in terms of the College's Administrative Leadership Team along with some of their core job responsibilities. President and Chief Academic Officer (CAO): Nathan Long, Ed.D.

What does a president and CAO do? The President is the chief strategist of the college much like any other college or university. In addition the President is a fundraiser; public relations person; and the accountable agent-in-charge of the institution. The president of our College reports to a board of directors. The President also holds the title of Chief Academic Officer (a designated CAO is a requirement of accreditation) The CAO is responsible for all academic activities within a college or university. In general, faculty and academic deans report to this individual and the CAO is ultimately accountable for curriculum, faculty contracts or appointments, rank and promotion, and the like.

What does the Dean of the Nursing Program and Nursing Education do? The Dean also prepares and submits reports to these regulatory entities to ensure compliance.

Director, Information Technology Services (ITS): Jo Murphy

What does the Director of ITS do? The Director provides a number of services to faculty, staff, and students of the College, including: computer lab management, end-user support for various applications such as email, ANGEL, and SONISWeb; education and training on various products; liaison to outside technology vendors; and audio-visual support.

While the focus is on your typical college student, much of the information in the report is helpful as we begin to look at how students learn and what goes into the learning process. Millennial Students

Recently, one of our faculty members shared an article about Millennial students. The article, recapping the work of Dr. Christy Price, Ed.D., outlined several dominant characteristics of Millennials. I thought these were interesting - what do you think?

Article Citation: Content from The Five R's of Engaging Millennial Students in "Faculty Focus: Focused on Today's Higher Education Professional".

In the recent online seminar Five Strategies to Engage Today's Students, Price shared some of what she's learned regarding the characteristics of Millennials' ideal learning environments, their preferences regarding assignments and assessment, and the characteristics of their ideal professor. She then outlined the instructional implications of her findings with the five R's for engaging Millennial students:

Research-based methods: Research suggests Millennials prefer a variety of active learning methods. When they are not interested in something, their attention quickly shifts elsewhere. Interestingly, many of the components of their ideal learning environment — less lecture, use of multimedia, collaborating with peers — are some of the same techniques research has shown to be effective, Price said.
Relevance: Millennials have grown up being able to Google anything they want to know, therefore they do not typically value information for information's sake. As a result, the professor's role is shifting from disseminating information to helping students apply the information. One of the greatest challenges for teachers is to connect course content to the current culture and make learning outcomes and activities relevant, Price said.
Rationale: Unlike Boomers who were raised in a more authoritarian manner in which they more readily accept the chain of command, Millennials were raised in a non-authoritarian manner and are more likely to comply with course policies when teachers provide them with a rationale for specific policies and assignments.
Relaxed: Millennials prefer a less formal learning environment in which they can informally interact with the professor and one another. In interviews with students, the term "laid back" was used repeatedly.
Rapport: Millennials are extremely relational. They are more central to their parents' lives than previous generations and are used to having the adults in their lives show great interest in them. They appreciate it when professors show that same interest, and they seem to be more willing to pursue learning outcomes when instructors connect with them on a personal level.

A Philosophical Framework for Leadership

As a leadership team, we felt it was important to bring everyone up to date on an important event that occurred last Thursday and Friday, November 10-11, 2011.

This year, for the first time, the Administrative Leadership Team engaged in a two-day retreat held at the Baldwin Building. There were several goals for the retreat:

1) To identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats with respect to how the Administrative Leadership Team Functioned;

2) To identify an approach to leadership by crafting a philosophical framework around leadership (we read Warren Bennis's book "On Becoming a Leader");

3) To discuss and potentially arrive at an approach for helping our Key Strategic Initiative (KSI) and project teams identify innovative strategies as we begin to execute our long-term strategic plan (associated with the concept of Blue Ocean Strategy).

I believe at the end of the two days we were extraordinarily successful. Much was accomplished and it is my hope this energy will continue well into the academic year and for years to come.

I want to focus on one product of the retreat in particular. The team developed a statement on leadership - a philosophical framework, if you will - intended to guide the Administrative Leadership Team's efforts as we move into the future. The statement was a result of deep discussion on what we value as a team, our strengths and our challenges. In short, we aspire to fulfill what is outlined in the statement below.

"Valuing our history and accepting the charge to accomplish the mission of the College, we, as leaders, are committed to modeling the core values of collaboration, caring, integrity, and excellence. We will do this by creating a culture that energizes, empowers, and inspires all members of the College community to actualize their personal and professional potential."

All members include the Board, faculty, staff, students, and TCH. Indeed, it is our goal to not only engage but to help actualize - and actualize is an important term as it implies transformation. Hold us accountable to this statement as we will be revisiting it constantly.

Associate Degree Nursing education had its inception in 1952 as the result of a research project conducted by Mildred Montag. The project sought to alleviate a critical shortage of nurses by decreasing the length of the education process to two years and to provide a sound educational base for nursing instruction by placing the program in community colleges. In 1958, the W. K. Kellogg Foundation funded the implementation of the project at seven pilot sites in four states (Haase, 1990).

The number of ADN programs has escalated from seven in 1958 to more than 940 today with over 600 of those in community colleges (American Association of Community Colleges [AACC]; Allnursingschools.com; Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System [IPEDS]). The intent of this statement is to clarify the role and value of associate degree nursing education and practice.

Graduates of associate degree nursing programs are professional nurses and are

Essential members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in diverse healthcare settings.
Able to derive strength from their ethnic, cultural, social, economic and gender diversity, thereby enhancing the capacity to respond to the healthcare needs of a diverse nation.

The Power of Youth - The Beauty of Music

Call me a sucker for good music...whenever I see truly people coming together to make music or do something extraordinary, I am always reminded we need to take a bit of time to just be and smell or "hear" the roses...

Check the video out below which is the Gustav Mahler Youth Symphony Orchestra performing at Music Hall in Vienna. They are playing Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony (2009). The conductor is Franz Welser-Most who is also conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra. I am always blown away by how many talented young people there are out there in this world of ours.

The video contains the whole symphony and it's worth even just turning on and listening to in the background. At the very end, you can hear the wonderful European approach to applause - very inspiring!

A biochemist and cook explains that cooking is all about chemistry and knowing some facts can help chefs understand why recipes go wrong. Because cooking is essentially a series of chemical reactions, it is helpful to know some basics. For example, plunging asparagus into boiling water causes the cells to pop and result in a brighter green. Longer cooking, however, causes the plant's cell walls to shrink and releases an acid. This turns the asparagus an unappetizing shade of grey...read more here.

Live Surgery Event a Success

An amazing group of high school students from around the Tri-State attended The Christ Hospital Live Surgery Event today. Several hundred students - both at Christ Hospital and across the region via web feed - were able to view a live kidney transplant. The College will begin hosting this event in February and it today was our first time to actually see all the inner workings. It was simply amazing!

I had the opportunity to speak to a number of individuals who were planning on medical school as well as those considering careers in allied health.

I want to thank all for the opportunity. In addition, I want to thank the Greater Cincinnati Health Council and TCH clinicians - specifically Dennis Long - for their hard work in bringing this event to fruition!

A few weeks ago, Dr. Zivkovic sent me a link to a site called Top Documentaries. This site is truly an outstanding warehouse of mainly free videos on a range of topics from art to health and medicine to education.

As part of the blog series, I thought I would begin to focus every Sunday on interesting documentaries related to health and medicine.

College Board member Dr. Thomas Broderick has been elected as the next president of The Christ Hospital medical staff. Here is the full article from the "Examiner":

Thomas M. Broderick, M.D., F.A.C.C., has been selected by his peers as the next medical staff president at The Christ Hospital, succeeding Patrick A. Kirk, M.D. In this role, Dr. Broderick’s duties will include facilitating communication between hospital administration and the medical staff, as well as enforcing and implementing medical staff bylaws and policies. Dr. Broderick will also serve as chairman of the Medical Executive Committee and as an Ex Officio member of all other medical staff committees.

Dr. Broderick is an interventional cardiologist whose specialties include angiography, angioplasty procedures, coronary artery disease and peripheral vascular disease. He is actively involved in cardiovascular research through the Carl and Edyth Lindner Center for Research and Education at The Christ Hospital and serves on the American Heart Association Board.

Dr. Broderick is a Cincinnati native, graduating from Xavier University and earning his medical degree at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed his internship, residency and a cardiology fellowship in angioplasty at the Indiana University Medical Center. Dr. Broderick serves as a fellow with the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association Council on Clinical Cardiology and the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions.

Reflections by Mr. Rick Ernst: Horan Scholarship Recipient

A moving expression of gratitude, Rick gave a truly moving speech at Monday evening's scholarship reception. Rick was recipient of The Horan Scholarship. We are truly fortunate to have Rick as a student and to have Mr. Horan and his company provide such generous support!

Below is a text version of Rick's remarks (thank you, Rick, for sharing):

I wouldlike to take the time to talk about my experience at The Christ College ofNursing and what this scholarship has meant to me. I remember the dayperfectly. It was July 19 that I happened to check my school email. Isaw the words scholarship opportunity and I thought this was a random emailthat didn’t apply to me. I read it anyway and as I did my jaw fell off my face.I had to read it again because I couldn’t believe it. I had been awarded theHoran Scholarship! My eyes welled up with tears as I called my wife and toldher of the great news! I have always believed that luck was when opportunitymeets preparation but I truly did not see this coming.

I am a husband, a father of two young children (ages 3 and 5) and I work three jobs to provide for my family. During the first year of nursingschool, there were weeks where I would work forty plus hours and then stay upmost of the night studying. Though the college does not recommend this, I really had no choice. I don’t want mychildren to make excuses so I have to lead by example and work as hard as Ican. I struggled through Nursing 150 and asked more than three differentteachers for help. What they taught me was invaluable! Their advice- instead oftrying to memorize everything, work through enough case studies to learn how tothink like a nurse. I did this, and it worked! My grades improved, and I ended up with a B in the class, something mychildren and I can be proud of!

I am anon-traditional student in every sense of the phrase. When I told my wife Iwanted to go to nursing school we both thought it would be too expensive andnot workable. That would have definitely been true if it weren’t for thescholarship assistance that I received. Scholarships have helped me, my wife and my children. My wife has been my soft place to land and myrock! She has had to be a single mom on a lot of nights so I could work and goto class. I am truly a loved and blessed man.

I remember clearly the open house Iattended in November of 2008. Iinstantly fell in love with the school. I did not want to apply anywhere else. ThoughI was not accepted on my first application, I met with Brad Jackson, theadmissions counselor, and he helped and guided me through which classes Ineeded to take and have success in order to get accepted. I took therecommended classes and succeeded. I hadinstructors from these classes write me letters of recommendation, and the nextyear when I reapplied, I was accepted. Maybethey realized they were not going to get rid of me!

This year I am taking Nursing 201and though it is also very challenging, I know I will be successful because ofmy support systems both at home and at this fine school! Help is everywherehere if you are willing to work hard and ask early. The teachers really careabout their students and you never feel like a number. This scholarship hasallowed me to work less and study more!! It has truly made a difference in mylife! Words cannot express how much this scholarship has helped my family! Ihope to repay the favor one day and pay it forward to a non-traditional studentlike myself! To the folks at Horan and Associates, you are appreciated morethan you know!!

The Christ College family expresses our condolences to the family of Carl H. Lindner who passed away yesterday. Among his many contributions, his support of various community initiatives and non-profits (including a variety of vital projects at The Christ Hospital) leaves a lasting legacy of truly amazing philanthropy.

From Wikipedia: "Lindner donated to charitable causes and political campaigns. The Lindner family has supported several Cincinnati private schools, including Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy, which was founded by the Lindners. Lindner supports his Carl H. Lindner Honors-PLUS program within the University of Cincinnati's College of Business. His Great American Insurance Company was once the title sponsor of the Cincinnati Masters tennis tournament.^[3] Phillips Chapel Church honored Lindner with the addition of the Carl Lindner, Jr Fellowship Hall. Most recently, in June 2011 The University of Cincinnati honored Mr. Lindner by renaming the College of Business the Carl H. Lindner College of Business after him in recognition of his and his families contributions to the college, university, and business community."

After review of the Noel LevitzStudent Satisfaction Inventory results at our quarterly August meeting, theCollege Board of Directors asked that the College focus in on two areas: quality of instruction and faculty fair andunbiased. Faculty and staff also engaged in discussion during the Faculty-Staff Institute in August. The Administrative Leadership Team discussed an approach and it was determined that understanding students' expectations and feedback related to these two areas was vitally important before we took action.

After reading the paper, I hope you will agree that thetake-home message is really three-fold:

students believe they made a great choice inselecting TCCNHS;
collectively, we do have room to grow in termsof how we communicate, collaborate, and innovate; action, in my belief, shouldbe faculty-staff defined and division led;
students have confidence in our faculty,especially in terms of their commitment and passion.

I continue to be impressed by the quality of our work andthe students who attend our great institution!

The Monday Missive: Student Forum and Survey Feedback

Last month, many of you (students) participated online or in face-to-face discussions with me. The focus of these particular discussions was on what quality of instruction meant to you as well as what it meant to have fair and unbiased faculty members in the classroom.

Why is this important to me and our collective of faculty and staff?

In May of 2011, we received our Noel-Levitz Student Satisfaction Inventory results. While students still have strong expectations and satisfaction around these areas, we noticed that there could be room for improvement. In order to identify what needed to be done, we had to better define what students were thinking when it came to these two particular topics.

It was determined that I hold forums and that we release an online survey to help clarify what you as students mean when referring to quality of instruction and faculty being fair and unbiased.

With strong participation from many students, I am now in the process of analyzing the results. On Friday of this week (October 7, 2011), I will be releasing these results with a recommended action plan. I will also post a white paper and snapshot of those results here on this blog.

One other major point that came out of both the face-to-face discussions and the online survey was a desire to have more opportunities for feedback. A great suggestion! I will make sure to schedule more forums with a degree of regularity for the remainder of this academic year. Be on the lookout for days and times.

Over the summer months, I decided to limit my dealings to the occasional Facebook/Twitter posting. However, during student forums and individual comments I have heard over the last month, there has been considerable interest in my reviving the blog.

So, beginning today (October 1), this weblog will serve as a method for me to connect with The Christ College community and our constituents about everything from happenings at the College, to discussions about health care higher education, to student outreach, to faculty and staff recognition, and much more.

I will also be using other tools like Facebook and Twitter, but the goal of this particular blog is to provide more robust information and dialog about the topics that matter most to all of us who are associated with The Christ College community.

You will also note (in the above menu) there are several pages to this blog, including links to photos, videos, and white papers (think pieces and other writings relevant to us here at the College). Check back periodically for updates (and of course, I will make sure to update the blog when I add new photos, videos, and other updates).

I urge you to stay connected and don't hesitate to jump into the discussion.
